Out Among The People
King Of The Coorong
LEN Freeman brought to me a letter from Alf. Pitman, of the Meningie Hotel, con- taining biographical
particulars and a photo- graph of Jim Trevorrow, known as the King of the Coorong, who passed away recently.

Jim Trevorrow
The note explained that Jim Trevorrow eventually married and settled near Salt Creek, on the Coorong,
about 32 years ago. He had a family of 14 children, eight of whom are liv- ing. He was known far and wide
by motorists who nego- tiated the Coorong. The letter continues:— "A lady and gentle man, with their two
children were motoring along the Coorong when the car stopped at Company Point sand drift. Night came on,
and the travellers, walked to Trevorrow's place and asked for assistance to get the car out of the drift.
Trevorrow informed them it was not wise to attempt it in the dark, as if successful, there were other drifts ahead,
where assistance could not so con- veniently be obtained. The wayfarers ex- plained they had no food
with them, that the children were very hungry, and they would like to journey on to Meningie. Tre- vorrow
explained that they had no chance of doing so in the dark.
A Friend Indeed
THE Trevorrow family had been dis-appointed in not receiving their rations, and were short of food. That
afternoon they had set the nets and caught half a dozen mullet, which were just cooked. The family were
in the act of sitting down to their evening meal when the motorists called. Tre- vorrow said, 'You can have what
we were going to have for tea.' The lady said, 'What are you going to do if we accept that?' He replied, 'Never
mind, we will make up some kind of stir-about with flour and manage all right until morning, when we will mus-
ter up some other food.' And the Trvorrows' tea was thoroughly enoyed by the motorist and his family. Rugs
were obtained from the car, and the travellers were lodged com- fortably for the night, and assisted along
the road next morning. This is only one case of many acts of kindness which Trevorrow did for people
travelling along the Coorong when the roads were in a
deplorable condi- tion.

Gave Him The Flying Mare
HERE is another story about Jim Tre- vorrow, known as the King of the Coo- rong, who died recently:—
Trevorrow, not a big man, though broad and sturdily built, was endowed with strength that few men possess.
One day a traveller entered Trevorrow's house, during the absence of the family, and took money, a watch,
and other small articles. Tre- vorrow suspected a tramp seen about the place, and rode after him to Wood's
Well, about 10 miles away. When he came up to the man, he accused him of the theft. The tramp, a thin,
scraggy sort of fellow, showed fight. Trevorrow said, "You can have a bit of that if you like," and at it they
went. There was a lively time, and Trevorrow, in relating the story, said he could see he had run against a bit of
a snag. He afterwards discovered that the man was a professional lightweight boxer. Trevorrow said, "I was
beginning to get a bit winded, and thought he might best me if I did not try some other attack, so I decided to
give him the flying mare. I threw him once, and the fellow came up the second time, and over he went
again. He cried a finish, and said he had had enough, and admitted he was beaten." Many of the sporting
people were well acquainted with Trevorow. The. Gall family, of Cantara, were very kind to him, also the
McCallums, of McGratli's Flats.
